What is a Casino?

A casino is a place where people gamble on games of chance. The modern casino is a massive building with a wide variety of table games, slot machines and poker rooms, plus restaurants, bars and other entertainment. Casinos are also a major source of revenue for many countries. They are often decorated in bright colors and have a cheery, exciting feel.

A lot of money is spent on security at casinos. There are usually cameras everywhere and a large number of employees watching everything that happens. Some casinos have catwalks above the casino floor where surveillance personnel can look down on players and their activities through one-way glass.

In the past, most casinos were run by mobster types. The mobsters supplied the money and often took sole or partial ownership of the casino. But as time went by, real estate developers and hotel chains had more money than the mobsters and were willing to invest in legitimate casinos. Federal crackdowns on mob involvement have also helped keep the mobsters away from their gambling cash cows.

Most casinos make their money by charging patrons a fee to play the games. This is called the vig or rake and can be anywhere from two to eight percent of the bets made. The casino also makes money by taking a cut of the profits from each game, which is called the house edge. This can be as low as two percent, but over time it adds up to the billions of dollars in profits that casinos rake in every year.
