What is a Slot?

1 min read

A slot is a narrow opening, especially one for receiving something, such as a coin or a letter. It can also refer to a position in an organization or a job.

When a player puts money into a slot machine, the computer randomly generates a sequence of numbers that correspond to the locations of the symbols on the reels. Once the digital reels stop spinning, the symbols that land in a pay line determine whether or not the player has won. A slot machine’s symbol set can vary widely and can include items like fruit, bells, and stylized lucky sevens.

Many states have laws regulating the operation of slot machines. Some restrict private ownership of all types of machines, while others only permit the use of machines of a certain age or type. In addition, some states limit the amount of time that a person can spend on a slot machine. This restriction, known as slot hold, is designed to keep people from getting bored with the game and leaving before they’ve won any money.

A slot is a type of reservation in BigQuery. When you assign a reservation to a project, folder, or organization, the resources in that project or folder can only use the number of slots assigned to them. If you don’t assign a reservation to a resource, it inherits its assignments from its parents in the resources hierarchy.
