What is a Casino?

A casino is a gambling house where patrons can enjoy games of chance. While casinos add many amenities to draw in customers, like musical shows, lighted fountains and lavish hotels, they would not exist without the games of chance that give them their billions of dollars in profits each year. Slot machines, blackjack, roulette, craps and baccarat are among the most popular gambling games in modern casinos.

Something about gambling (maybe it’s the money) encourages cheating and stealing, which is why casinos spend a lot of time and money on security measures. They have numerous cameras throughout the building and staff who watch for anything out of the ordinary. They also use technology to monitor the games, for example “chip tracking,” which enables them to see exactly how much is wagered on each chip minute-by-minute; and to quickly discover any deviations from the expected results.

The most famous casino in the world is probably the Bellagio in Las Vegas, but there are hundreds more scattered around the globe. The word casino has been used to describe everything from small clubhouses for social activities to huge entertainment complexes, but the vast majority of casinos are places where gambling is the primary activity.
